Synopsis:

Sean Doran, a man convinced he has inherited a life-threatening genetic disease, resolves to travel the world as a nurse caring for the poor, sick and injured, found among natural disasters and war zones. He is determined to do as much good as possible with the time he has. Physically and emotionally burned out, Sean returns home to Belham, Massachusetts, only to realize that home may be the one place he is needed the most.

Review: Ah the perfect Fall novel to me is one that you can read in one sitting, curled up with a good cup of coffee. This one fits the bill! I finished it in 2 hours! I could not put it down, I wanted to see how the characters' issues were going to be resolved! The characters will leave their memory with you. I'd love to read a followup book, with the characters a few years down the line and see where they are now- they were that interesting! The setting may be Yankee, but it could be any small town, and the places and characters will resonate with you if you live in one! Fay has such a way with her characters, that I am off to read her other two books!
About the Author: Juliette Fay, author of The Shortest Way Home, won the 2009 Massachusetts Book Award Book of the Year for her first novel, Shelter Me. Her second novel,Deep Down True, was short-listed for the Women's Fiction Award by the American Library Association. She received a bachelor's degree from Boston College and a master's degree from Harvard University. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband and four children. The Shortest Way Home is her third novel.
