There is an inherent value to me in a well-stocked bookshelf. I’m including my iBook, Nook, and Kindle shelves here too.

Books hold a comfort for me that no other form of entertainment can come close to duplicating, maybe because books intimately tap into the reader’s imagination. My bookshelf holds intrigue when I’m bored, solace when I’m sad, and comedy when I need a laugh. No matter what the need there is a book waiting to fill it.

When I stand in front of my shelves I imagine my books like eager, tail wagging puppies. Will this be the day that she picks me? And I get the same feeling that I get when I have to choose; I want to take them all home at the same time, but I can’t. I can only pick one.

That’s when I have to stare into space for a while and decide what I need right now. Sometimes I need to meet a new date and I pick an author I’ve never read before. There are other times that only an old friend will do and I grab one of my well-worn paperbacks.

Books are always with me; in my purse, on my mind, or in my hands. They are my grown-up version of a security blanket. Let’s face it they are far more socially acceptable than a grown woman wandering the streets wrapped in a quilt.

Even my own books bring me comfort when I sit down to write. The characters are old friends I haven’t visited in a while, and every time I sit down to write we have a lot of catching up to do. I spend hours chatting with them in my head. By the time I type “the end” I’m sure my characters are as happy for me to be done with them as I am to be done with them. At least for a little while.

I take a piece of every book I read or write with me when I close the cover or type the last sentence. Well or poorly written, good or bad the stories all have a profound effect on me. Some change me, some entertain me; all are part of me forever.
